Distorted Concepts, misconceptions and delusions from the cold war
After the end of World War II, two super powers emerged, two countries emerged as super strong militarily, The Soviet Union and the USA.
Great Britain and France retrieved as international major players, while Germany, Japan were devastated, the states defeated at World War II, China was still recovering from the wounds of Japanese invasion, Italy had narrowly escaped being declared as a hostile defeated nation, they had managed to declare war on their ally Germany and thus escape consequences of participating as part of the Axis Alliance (Germany-Japan-Italy)
The world was divided into two poles, two strongholds, and two fronts, one of them, the Democratic West, and the other the Eastern front, The Soviet Union was the leader of the eastern front, with an empire ranging from the Soviet Union, until Eastern Europe, The Soviet Union had greatly benefited from the help of the allies and outsmarted them to reach until East Germany, it had a huge war machine they formed a pact, the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany), Communist Yugoslavia stayed out of this axis
The United States, the industrial economical military superpower was the leader of the western world, and the major allies, France-USA-Great Britain on the west side and the Soviet Union on the east side very soon turned from allies against Nazism to political, military, economical sharp rivals, the western front also formed an alliance, the NATO, which reached until Turkey, on the borders of the Soviet Union.
And since both the western major powers and the Soviet Union, were nuclear powers, and as much as both sided wanted to see the other side destroyed the sooner the better, they could not risk any direct escalation and conformation, one which would lead to nuclear war, and thus chose the cold war.
The red lines of the cold war were proxy wars, wars that would be waged outside the borders of NATO and Warsaw pacts, outside these borders, no restrictions existed, it was to be a full war, on fields of economy, regime set up, wars on other countries, and on every level and aspect rivalry started,
One field of this war was naturally the very core of this war, while the Soviet Union was a radical communist economic, cultural and ideological ground; the Western states had a liberal economic system and were a democracy
And since the channel to promote each sides model as ideal was the propaganda, a ruthless demagogue distorted ideas and concepts, delusions were pushed down to the general public worldwide, and the result of this distorted propaganda and ideas is the topic of this article.
The most victim of these ideas were the smaller nations, nations who were subject to cultural, national and intellectual attacks, and the Soviet Union, who declared itself a champion of smaller nations undermined those countries by ideas, adopted by proxy regimes, and one of them the most notorious regime, the Syrian regime, and others before.
In the case of Lebanon, I remember a documentary of President Kamil Chammoun, where the documentary says that Chamoun regarded that three ideologies were a threat to Lebanese Entity (Existence), Communism, Zionism and Nasserism
Nasserism was the ideology based on the ideas of Arabic Egyptian president Jamal Abdel Nasser, Abdel Nasser called for the unification of the Arabic states, he was considered the symbol of Arabic nationalism, the champion of Arabic unification
Nasserism also found ground in Lebanon, ironically, Lebanese National parties, the patriotic parties, (Liberal Democrat – Ahrars, And the Lebanese Phalange) who were simply the guardians of Lebanese independence, entity and sovereignty, are until today accused of being extremist nationalists who are in fact powers who kept aiming to lead and drag Lebanon to isolation from its Arabic surrounding
The Nasserism left went run wild, and started a revolution, but international intervention safeguarded Lebanon, this back in 1958
I say ironically, because accusing Lebanese right patriotism of fascism is absurd, it is Fascism who was seeking unifications, The German National Socialist party (Nazis) wanted to unite the Germanic race, Until Ukraine, disregarding the existence of other nations, The Ottoman empire in the first world war was seeking unification of the great turanic (Nations of Turkish Origin) races until China, Japan claimed to aim for unification of the far east Asian states
The smaller nations defended themselves, nations such as Poland, Finland, The Philippines, and Czechoslovakia …. And of course others. Accusing the Lebanese right of fascism is like saying that Democratic Hitler just had to invade Poland to defend it from the Polish nationalist extremists.
While the danger of explosion was momentarily removed, it was merely postponed, and the Lebanese state was not far sighted enough to deal with these distortions, it should have worked hard to spread awareness, and failure to do so led to the second conspiracy, and Lebanon could not avoid it this time, Lebanon had not learned it’s lesson
After the defeat of the Arab states who failed to liberate occupied Palestine in 1967, the Palestinian armed resistance entered Jordan, but the Jordanian army made sure that Palestinians had no business resisting anything inside Jordan, when the Palestinians failed to comply, the Jordanian state was firm and strict, this did not mean that the Jordanian king was a traitor, or a fascist, it simply meant the simple principle that no one should argue about, Jordan stand sin solidarity with the Palestinian cause, but this does not mean that this solidarity must extend to the limits of sacrificing the Jordanian national security to prove this solidarity
And now the conspiracy chose it’s direction, Lebanon, a nation weak in its awareness, weak in national awareness, and the Palestinian resistance entered Lebanon
The idea that the Lebanese Army was weak to control the Palestinian armed resistance is not accurate, this is a huge falsification and an offense to one’s logic, would the Palestinian resistance defy the Lebanese state, a nation with national awareness could have been mobilized in a matter of weeks, everyone would have helped the legitimate democratic government of The Lebanese republic, NO, the issue lied elsewhere, in distorted perverted misconception, that strange ideas that a state who sees it’s national and state security as a red line, is an extreme racist fascist egoist savage regime, this is not true, and when the
Palestinians entered Lebanon, every Lebanese stood in solidarity with the Palestinians, but naturally not on the expense of Lebanon.
And these ideas carried on, when the war started, it was not a traditional civil war, it was a struggle of existence and survival, and to regard the Lebanese patriotic national powers defending the republic as ultra nationalist extremism is the wildest expression of fascism
Not long later, the Syrian regime entered, as far as everyone knows, the Syrian regime raises slogans of Arabic nationalism and calls for Arabic unification (one that fits it’s agenda), it openly stated over and over again that Lebanon is part of Syria, and said this is how GOD created history and geography, now who is the extreme here, the one who bombarded Lebanon for 15 years, until it occupied it for another 15 years, or the small number of the Lebanese resistance who resisted it. Are the fighters of the Lebanese front, the Lebanese forces, the Lebanese resistance the actual imperialists, how many streets of Damascus did they occupy, or was it the Syrian army who bombarded my own building with 33 bombs of “non imperialist friendly rockets to make us the peaceful residents learn lessons of awareness and let go of our fascist imperialist tendencies”
No gentleman, Lebanese resistance is as much a fascist as Indira Gandi, if defending one’s country is not an act of national patriotism but fascism, then we Lebanese are the Genghis Khan of the 21 century
In the year 2005, the Lebanese Druze Left, The Lebanese Christian right, the Lebanese Armenians and the Lebanese Muslim Sunni finally became aware, national awareness prevailed and we formed the Cedar revolution
May the LORD safeguard the republic of Lebanon.
